Project context

Faya began with my interest in women’s professional and financial autonomy. Woolf’s writing on income and creative freedom, Beauvoir’s discussion of economic independence, and Federici’s analysis of unpaid domestic work informed this focus.

I developed Faya to support women in defining concrete actions toward their professional and financial goals and keeping those actions accessible over time.

The problem

An online survey with ten potential users explored difficulties in following through on goals. Seven had an idea of their next action but needed to define it more clearly. Responses also highlighted broad goals, forgetting to review recorded goals, and losing track of the materials used to record them.

These findings refined the question guiding Faya: How might I help women turn their professional and financial goals into clear next steps they can return to over time?

Decisions

I chose cultivation as a metaphor for women’s professional and financial development, using gradual flower growth to give completed actions a visible, cumulative expression. Cambridge Dictionary’s definition of bloom — “to grow or develop successfully” — informed this interpretation.

A separate online survey with ten respondents gathered first impressions of an earlier version and informed the revisions below.

Making the next action explicit

Flower + sprout

I represented each goal as a flower and connected it to smaller actions called sprouts, giving users a structure for breaking down broader goals.

Feedback on the earlier version revealed uncertainty about what sprouts meant and how to formulate them. In response, I expanded the onboarding to explain their role and added examples to guide action writing.

Current stage

Faya is live, with revised onboarding and an updated interaction for adding goals. The next evaluation will examine these changes, understanding of growth and completion, and whether users return to review and update their goals over time.
